Back in 2014, Raggett came across a poached elephant while on safari in Kenya. Heartbroken by the sight, she was inspired to take action and reached out to fellow wildlife photographers, asking them to donate their images for a book aimed at raising money for elephant conservation. Every photographer agreed and thus Remembering Elephants was born.
Since then, Raggett has continued the project, releasing a new book each year focused on a different endangered species – from rhinos and apes to lions, polar bears and cheetahs. All the photos are generously donated by some of the world’s best wildlife photographers.
This year marks a big milestone with the release of 10 Years of Remembering Wildlife. The new book features stunning images from the past decade alongside fresh photos, including a powerful chapter on the pangolin (the world’s most trafficked mammal).
The project is fully funded through public support and every cent’s destination is transparently shared on their website’s landing page.
Over the past ten years, the team has donated profits to more than 80 conservation projects across 34 countries, making a real difference for animals in need. The team, which includes photographers, designers and editors, all work for well below commercial rates because they believe in the cause.
The books aim to show both the beauty of wildlife and the urgent need to protect it. As Raggett says, the goal is to help people see what’s at stake and what can still be saved.
“All of the stunning images we use in our books and exhibitions have been generously donated by our photographers, as their way to give back to the species they make their livings from photographing,” the team explained.
So far, they’ve raised more than £1.23 million GBP (around $2.53 million AUD) for conservation since starting in 2015 and they’re determined to grow that even further.
