Students in Ireland swap school bus for "bus of bikes"

By Lucy Jones  September 9th, 2020

Kids have embraced the green transport alternative, saying it's a brilliant way to get to school.

A group of primary school students and parents living in Limerick, Ireland have traded their school buses and private cars in for bicycles. The 30 families who have joined Limerick school's cycle bus can be seen riding across the city each morning in their 'bus of bikes'.

The cycle bus was developed as a COVID safe travel alternative that allows children to social distance while travelling to school. So far, the green transport option has been a hit with kids.

"It's brilliant and once you start you're hooked, you can't stop," student Bobby Collins told RTÉ news.

"Every morning you're up out of bed, you're on your bike and then you're at school."

In addition to providing fitness benefits for kids, the cycle bus is also helping families cut their carbon emissions and reducing congestion on roads.

"It makes perfect sense to get the kids to cycle to school and get families out of their cars, and out of the early morning congestion. For far too long the priority has been the use of cars for transport," Conor Buckley, Chair of the Limerick Cycling Campaign, said.
